Option T1 | Anaesthesia - Practical Tips for GPs

A one-day course for practitioners interested in upgrading their anaesthesia skills. All scheduled operation rooms will be available for one-on-one participation with anaesthetists in the morning. A “Lunch with the Professors” will follow with the course participants discussing specific cases. The afternoon will include didactic sessions on newer anaesthesia techniques.

Option T4 | The Family Physician's Approach to the Eye Exam

It is essential that family physicians have the skills and knowledge of the ophthalmology exam in primary care. This workshop will include a didactic session reviewing a Primary Care Physician Approach to the Eye Exam and an interactive small group rotation through 3 separate stations lead by 3 ophthalmologists. A review of the common ophthalmologic problems and practical ophthalmologic procedural techniques for the family physicians office will be reviewed.

Dr. Robert Irvine and ENT Faculty at St. Paul’s Hospital
A review of common ENT problems in family practice. Participants rotate through six interactive hands-on stations to learn practical ENT office examination techniques. Problems reviewed include dizziness, hearing loss, epistaxis, sinusitis, pediatric ENT, airway assessment and peritonsillar abscess. There will be sufficient time for discussion of these and any other topics the participants wish to raise.

This interactive and practical session will review common problems in the first three years of life and provide answers to the most common questions asked by parents of young children. The session will review common issues encountered in the family practice setting such as sleep disturbances of childhood, common dietary myths and poor feeding behaviour, recognition of childhood obesity in the young child, discipline in the young child and a variety of common symptoms of the age group.

Option TH4 | Fund O’ Mentals: Tools and Resources for Mental Health Care

Between one quarter and one third of all patients seen by family physicians are suffering from a primary psychiatric disorder. In a small group discussion and tutorial format we will offer specific objective and subjective techniques that we believe will assist in recognizing specific psychiatric syndromes in your day to day practice and will lead to more effective treatment interventions. We will then discuss the two key questions that you should direct to your patient for each specific syndrome that will refine your diagnostic accuracy. In addition, we will present a number of brief psychometrics (patient questionnaires) that can be used in your office to assist with the diagnosis (and ongoing evaluation of treatment efficacy) of a depressive disorder, bipolar illness, anxiety disorders, OCD, adult ADHD, and substance abuse.
